It is the leading region for the highest production of electricity from the sun. However, it slips to third place for efficiency, after Valle D’Aosta and Emilia Romagna
The Piedmont Region surpasses all other regions in Italy, rising to the top of the rankings for the highest production of electricity from photovoltaics, followed by Lombardy and Veneto.
This is established by a study conducted by Aceper, the Association of Consumers and Producers of Renewable Energy, which includes 10,000 renewable energy production plants. Over 7,000 members contribute to a total installed capacity exceeding 2GWp.
Aceper based its report on a sample of 5,236 photovoltaic plants in 17 Italian regions.
However, if we consider the ratio between actual energy produced and expected energy in terms of production, the rankings change. In this case, Valle d’Aosta is the most efficient region in producing solar power, followed by Emilia Romagna, while Piedmont drops to third place.
But what makes a region efficient in this sector?
The parameter is based on the ratio between actual photovoltaic production and expected photovoltaic production, where the expected production is estimated according to the official Pvgis (Photovoltaic Geographical Information System) measurement tool, the European scientific center providing information on solar radiation and photovoltaic system performance. According to Pvgis data, the national average currently stands at 65%.
In Aceper’s rankings, Valle d’Aosta leads as the most virtuous region with 960,391 KWh actually produced and an expected production of 1,011,502 KWh, resulting in a ratio of 95% between actual and expected production.
Second place goes to Emilia Romagna, with 37,939,525 KWh produced and 43,840,630 KWh expected (87% ratio), ahead of Piedmont, third with 139,917,414 KWh produced and 162,741,031 KWh expected (86% ratio), but clearly first in KWh produced from photovoltaics.
Energy communities have been a strong point of regional policy. Piedmont was the first region to launch this initiative, with the approval of a specific regional law and the provision of incentives since December 2020 to develop collective self-consumption systems from renewable sources. This experience has been successfully implemented in four areas of the region and serves as an example for other Italian regions.
Continuing the rankings of the most virtuous regions, with an 85% ratio, we find Abruzzo with 20,100,052 KWh produced and 23,625,127 KWh expected, Liguria with 5,187,522 KWh produced and 6,108,499 KWh expected, and Lombardy, second in the ranking for photovoltaic production with 66,305,239 KWh produced and 78,089,977 KWh expected. Veneto follows with 49,221,066 KWh produced and 58,691,563 KWh expected (84% ratio), the third Italian region for production.
