Boom in photovoltaics in Italy: digitalization of energy becoming increasingly important

Italian solar power is experiencing record numbers not seen since the Conto Energia program in 2013: +12,000 installations, totaling 1.6 GW

In the first nine months of 2022, Italian photovoltaic power reached record numbers: 12,000 new installations, totaling 1.6 GW, a level of activity not seen since 2013 during the last Conto Energia program. This information comes from the latest statistical outlook by GSE (InFotovoltaico), which also reports that as of September 30, there were 1,140,000 systems in operation, a 12% increase compared to the end of 2021.

Nearly half of the installations belong to the industrial sector (accounting for 51% of the total installed capacity), followed by the tertiary sector (20%), residential (18%), and agriculture (11%). 35% of the systems are ground-mounted (occupying 15,800 hectares), while 65% are installed on buildings, roofs, and other coverings.

The growth, following eight years of relative stability in the sector, spans all size categories of systems, all regions, and the main cities of the country. Among these, Piedmont leads in electricity production from photovoltaics, followed by Lombardy and Veneto, as confirmed by research from the Association of Renewable Energy Consumers and Producers (Aceper).

Among the provinces, Lecce stands out with a performance of 1,100 operational hours, averaging 4 hours/day.

However, there are specific challenges and issues, particularly for photovoltaic system owners and industry operators. This is highlighted by research from Raptech (https://www.raptech.it/), a company operating in the Renewable Energy market for over 15 years, offering technology, IT support, monitoring systems, and asset management for installations.

Thanks to the digital transformation of energy, it’s possible to increase efficiency in managing photovoltaic assets. Asset management can involve repetitive operations that, if automated, can lead to a remarkable improvement in both time and quality of results. Raptech’s research measured a time reduction of between 80% and 95% for these activities. This increased efficiency also nearly eliminates cash flow imbalances caused by issues with the disbursement of contributions or the sale of energy.

For this reason, the company launched the Remote Meter Reading tool some time ago, based on their proprietary R-Cloud platform, which offers online access to all data and the ability to download in standard formats. It performs daily readings of the “load curve” and all available registers via GSE modems, with production values updated every fifteen minutes, automatic comparison with the Enel Distribuzione Portal, and automatic GSE payment control.
