This is according to a study by Aceper (Association of Consumers and Producers of Renewable Energy) on energy production and efficiency. The region ranks first and third, respectively.

This is an excellent result, a product of the many renewable energy policies promoted by the Piedmont Region. One notable example is the Regional Environmental Energy Plan (read HERE), approved by the Regional Council in March 2022. Among its goals is to achieve 50% of electricity production from renewable sources by 2030. The Plan also includes a 30% reduction in fossil fuel energy consumption.

These are all sustainable development goals included in the UN’s Agenda 2030, and they demonstrate that there is at least an effort to achieve them. Zooming in on the data reported by Aceper, the study was conducted across 17 Italian regions with a sample of over 5,000 photovoltaic systems.

Piedmont produces almost 140 million kilowatt-hours, placing it in first position, followed by Lombardy and Veneto. The situation differs when it comes to “virtuosity“: the term used by Aceper refers to the ratio between the actual energy produced and the expected energy, or the energy that is estimated to be obtained. Leading in this category is Aosta Valley, with a ratio of 95%. Emilia-Romagna follows (87%), and Piedmont wins bronze with an 86% ratio. It is important to note that the national average is 65%, a percentage that we hope will soon increase.

With the introduction of energy communities by the Region and more than 54,000 residential systems, renewable energy has been defined as a strong point of Piedmont.

One can only hope that this commitment can also materialize in other areas, such as the reduction of air pollution.
